2:30 p.m.: Main presentation by guest speaker Lauri Arnold, LIT Program Director, on Virtual Machines - VMware
Virtual machine – storing another computer operating system on a host computer hard drive. Hyper V, Virtual PC and VMWare (best on market) versions
Average file: 10-15 gigs
Advantages: Can carry hard drive (computer) easily
Can set up in minutes (vs. hours)
Great for troubleshooting
Can run using any OS
Can run several ‘computers’ at time using one computer (host computer)
Costs: Licenses are required, additional RAM may be required
Needs: 64 bit, multi-core processor, lots of RAM & space on server
Security: Can be an issue - not only spam, e-mail scanner, anti-virus, but physical security. Copy of ‘computer’ on hard drive can be made and no one would know. Hacking password, as on all computers, is easy.
Lauri also discussed XP and IPads and Tablets.
